About Seattle
Seattle is nestled between two mountain ranges, on the shores of Puget Sound. This ideal location ensures a bounty of outdoor activities year-round, from skiing and hiking to boating and beachcombing.
It’s a city of 620,000 residents with strong civic, cultural and personal relationships abroad. As a major port for trans-Pacific and European trade, Seattle is the fifth largest container port in the United States and the 25th largest in the world.
Known for its vibrant local music scene, Seattle was the birthplace of rocker Jimi Hendrix and such internationally known grunge bands as Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden. It has a professional symphony, ballet, opera and many active theatre groups, along with a thriving museum community and art gallery scene. Besides its cultural affiliations, Seattle is world headquarters for Microsoft, Boeing, Amazon.com and Starbucks, to name a few.
Seattle’s history
Seattle was settled relatively late in the history of the U.S. In 1851, five pioneer families landed at Alki Point on the western side of the city but soon moved to the more sheltered Elliott Bay, site of today’s downtown. In 1889, the city was burned to the ground in one day by the Great Seattle Fire. City officials chose to rebuild the city on top of the old one, and today a tour of subterranean Seattle is a popular tourist attraction. With the arrival of the Great Northern Railway in 1893, the city grew rapidly as a main rail terminus. Its first economic boom came in the 1890s, as the last U.S. departure point for those chasing Alaska’s Klondike Gold Rush. It continued to prosper as a major Pacific port, and in 1962, hosted the World's Fair. One of the city’s most treasured icons, the Space Needle (photo, at right), was built for that event.
The Seattle-Perugia Sister City Association: What's it all about?
International understanding: sometimes it's achieved suddenly through mass movements, mass media and the diplomacy of nation-states. On the other hand, sometimes it's achieved slowly, one person at time. The sister city program is about the slow way, the citizens of one city meeting the citizens of another. We learn about them and, by doing so, we learn about ourselves.
Read our story: Seattle and Perugia are two cities with great differences. Yes, they're both pleasantly seated on beautiful hills swathed in greenery, they both are the homes of great universities, but other than that, it's hard to see them as sisters of the same family. Perugia is so very old and Seattle is so very young. The Seattle-Perugia SCA is dedicated to the idea that Seattle and Perugia can learn from one another, their very differences serving as a rich source of new civic thinking. Then again, for all that is different between our two cites, there are nevertheless things we share; these we work to recognize so they may serve to bind our bits of Italy and the U.S. more closely. We support the pleasures of travel, the riches of culture and the opportunities presented by education, hoping to bring together the peoples of two great cities.
